Munich Christmas markets on the Marienplatz and the “Eiszauber” ice skating rink

As soon as preparations for the Christmas season are underway, the Munich Christmas markets set up their stalls. The largest Christmas market in Munich stretches from the Odeonsplatz via the Marienplatz, all the way to the Stachus square, where the “Muenchner Eiszauber” ice skating rink is set up each year. Where the Stachus fountain usually stands, visitors will find an ice rink where skaters both big and small can go for a spin. After skating, visitors can tuck into a bratwurst sausage in a bun and enjoy a glass of “Feuerzangenbowle” (a traditional punch-like alcoholic drink).

Another Christmas market worth looking at is the “Winterlicher Mittelaltermarkt” (medieval Christmas market) on Wittelsbacher Platz, right by the Odeonsplatz. Performers here don medieval clothes, and instead of Christmas music, visitors will hear medieval songs. “Feuerzangenbowle" punch is served here in old stoneware mugs and the cuisine is also from back in the day. There is no electric grill; the sausages, fish and roasted pig are sometimes barbecued over an open fire.
